Four Starter Vintage Watches Under $1000
You’ve been bitten by the vintage bug. Where do you start?
The vintage watch market is growing faster than ever, and prices for prized pieces have skyrocketed in the last half-decade — but there are still some gems to be found in the under-$1,000 category.
If you’ve just begun your dive into vintage, or if you’re a collector looking for an affordable and reliable companion with some history behind it, we’re making those first steps easier with a list of four world-class vintage watches for under $1k.
Omega Geneves
There’s gotta be at least one Omega on this list! There’s no better way to start off a prime vintage collection than with one of the world’s most famous watch manufacturers, and Omega has plenty of affordable hidden treasures if you search long enough.
One of the most underrated pieces in this category is the Geneve, which was produced between 1953 and 1979 and comes in infinite variations of dial, case shape and condition. A piece like this 19__ Geneve can be found for around $800 and is perfectly capable of looking great on any strap.
Vintage Longines
Longines have a storied history and a string of firsts behind their name, and while in modern times they have fallen a little below the radar, they have a broad array of vintage pieces that pack an impressive punch at a great value.
This particular Longines Admiral model has undeniable vintage class with wearable dimensions, and it has a few great grey, blue and white dial variants if you know where to look for them. We love vintage Longines because no two models are alike, and the cushion case on this piece wears as comfortably as the “cushion” name suggests.
Universal Geneve Pre-Polerouter Watches
If you’ve been paying any attention to vintage watches the last few years, you’ve undoubtedly heard of the Universal Geneve Polerouter, designed by the legendary Gerald Genta (creator of the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak). While the price for Polerouters has jumped, there’s a ton of value in slightly earlier Universal Geneve models, sporty or dress, with any combination of interesting dial arrangements.
Something like this Universal Geneve with a linen dial can be found under $900 in killer condition, and pairs flawlessly with your favourite leather strap.
Bulova Selfwinding or Snorkel Models
A gem of the 60s and hot on the tails of the diver watch craze is my personal favourite on this list. Bulova Selfwinding or Snorkel divers are a cult hit and most definitely underpriced at the moment. With their occult-inspired “666 feet” depth rating and Rolex Explorer-like numerals, these exude mid-century tool watch class.
While they’re steadily heading up in price, examples can be found around the $1,000 mark.
As always when buying vintage, the eBay-scouring rabbithole is a tempting hellscape — you’ve heard it a thousand times, but always remember to buy the dealer, not just the watch. If you need help finding one of these fantastic pieces or have questions about more, we’re happy to help.
Happy hunting!
