The 1-of-50 Enamel Dragon

The Concord "Year of the Dragon" is a legitimate sleeper in the world of high-art horology. Produced in a strictly limited run of 50 pieces in 1998, this is an artifact of traditional craftsmanship that typically commands six-figure entries from the "Holy Trinity" houses. It features a genuine, hand-painted enamel dial—a material prized for its eternal color and depth. This isn't a mass-produced print; it is a microscopic work of art that represents a rare moment where Concord leaned into high-end artisanal execution.

Hand-Painted Artistry

The dial depicts a fierce, intricate dragon motif rendered in vivid enamel and accented by diamond hour markers. Enamel dials are notoriously difficult to produce, as the repeated firing process often results in cracks that ruin the entire piece. Finding a perfectly preserved example is a rarity. The 18k gold case measures 25mm x 34mm, offering a refined, rectangular silhouette that allows the artistry of the dial to be the undisputed focal point. It manages to feel both symbolic and sophisticated, providing a level of detail rarely encountered outside of bespoke commissions.

Condition and Performance Verified

The piece is in overall excellent vintage condition. The 18k gold case and sapphire crystal are in excellent condition, ensuring the enamel work remains protected and clearly visible. It is a healthy, verified, and exceptionally rare opportunity to own a high-level enamel dial timepiece at an accessible entry point. It represents a specific, "if you know, you know" trophy for the collector who values technical craftsmanship over brand hype.

Mechanical Integrity and Provenance

Unlike many decorative pieces of the era, this Limited Edition houses a manual-wind mechanical movement visible through a clear exhibition caseback. It remains fitted to its original black alligator strap and matching 18k gold buckle, preserving the original factory aesthetic. This example is especially notable for its completeness, as it is accompanied by the original papers—a critical detail for a piece with a worldwide production run of only 50 units.

History

Founded in 1908 in Biel/Bienne, Switzerland, Concord was established by five Swiss visionaries — among them master watchmakers like Walter Hugenin and Charles Bonny — with the explicit intention of designing high-quality, luxury Swiss timepieces with the American market in mind. From the early decades, the brand built a reputation for producing watches in precious metals and gemstones, including supplying elite jewelers such as Tiffany & Co., Van Cleef & Arpels, and Cartier. Over time, Concord achieved important technical milestones — for example, it was among the first to offer coin-dial or coin-case variations and pushed ultra-thin case designs.

By the late 1970s and 1980s, Concord entered its most visible era: under the ownership of the Movado Group/North American Watch Company structure (after acquisition around 1970) it shifted into the luxury-quartz arena while capitalizing on its heritage. Landmark models such as the “Delirium” series (one of the world’s thinnest watches at launch) and the “Mariner” and “Saratoga” collections became status pieces, especially in North America.

Concord has a number of compelling stories and attributes that make it interesting for collectors. First, the brand’s historical connection to high-luxury jewelry houses and its use of precious metals and gems give it inherent luxury credentials. Second, certain models are rare and hold design/technical significance (for example, the Delirium’s records for thinness). These factors tend to elevate interest and value. Third, despite its high profile at one time, the brand did not maintain the elevated dominance of some peers, meaning there are under-the-radar gems (especially in the pre-owned market) offering strong value relative to more ubiquitous luxury names. A watch collector blog notes: “Concord is one of those brands that casual collectors ignore — and real collectors quietly scoop up when no one’s watching.”

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
