Daniel Roth 2207BB – Grey Tapestry Dial

Details

This is an opportunity to own one of the most elusive expressions of neo-vintage independent horology: the Daniel Roth “Seconds at Six” Ref. 2207BB, a rare early production model from 1995, housed in the larger 35x38mm ellipsocurvex case crafted from solid 18K yellow gold.

Daniel Roth—one of the pioneers of modern independent watchmaking—crafted this piece with his signature mix of classical inspiration and avant-garde execution. The vertical guilloché (tapestry) dial, rendered in a deep slate grey, is both austere and intricate, playing beautifully with light and showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship for which Roth is revered.

What sets this piece apart—and makes it highly collectible—is the early “large seconds” subdial configuration at 6 o’clock. Few examples of this dial layout exist, and it was documented in 1995 Daniel Roth advertisements, confirming this rare variation’s legitimacy. Very few have surfaced in any metal, making this watch not only a beautiful timepiece but also a true collector’s prize.

The watch is in wonderfully preserved original condition, showing only light wear consistent with age, and the movement is running smoothly. All major components—the dial, case, movement, and original Daniel Roth-signed buckle—are 100% original and untouched, with the only exception being a custom high-quality strap chosen to enhance its wearability.

Balanced yet bold, refined yet striking, this watch pairs effortlessly with both casual and formal wardrobes, making it ideal for daily wear or special occasions. It’s a testament to Daniel Roth’s enduring design philosophy and an exceptional example of independent haute horology from a now-legendary atelier.

Whether you're a seasoned collector or seeking your first truly distinctive watch, this is a rare chance to acquire an early piece of modern watchmaking history—available now exclusively at our New York City flagship boutique.

History

Daniel Roth is widely regarded as one of the founding figures of modern independent haute horology. His career began in the heart of traditional Swiss watchmaking, where he trained in the Vallée de Joux and honed his skills at Audemars Piguet before making a major mark at Breguet.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Roth played a pivotal role in reviving the Breguet brand, helping restore its reputation by reinterpreting its classic aesthetic—engine-turned guilloché dials, coin-edge cases, and signature hands—while also introducing mechanical innovations. His work at Breguet reestablished it as a major force in high horology and positioned Roth as a visionary watchmaker.

Seeking creative independence, Roth left Breguet and in 1989 founded his own eponymous brand, Daniel Roth, in Le Sentier. His watches were immediately recognized for their distinct and elegant double-ellipse (ellipsocurvex) case shape, intricate guilloché dials, and high-complication movements, often hand-finished to the highest standards. Many of his early models featured tourbillons, perpetual calendars, and retrograde displays, emphasizing Roth’s dedication to traditional complications interpreted through a contemporary lens.

Throughout the 1990s, Daniel Roth watches garnered a cult following among connoisseurs and collectors, particularly for their low production numbers, technical integrity, and refined aesthetics. These pieces are now considered important milestones in the independent watchmaking movement, preceding other now-household names like F.P. Journe and Kari Voutilainen.

In the early 2000s, the Daniel Roth brand was acquired by the Bulgari Group, which maintained some of the brand’s signature designs before gradually phasing it into Bulgari's own high-end collection. However, the original Daniel Roth creations from the 1990s remain highly collectible, cherished for their purity of vision and artisanal craftsmanship.

In 2023, it was announced that Daniel Roth would relaunch in partnership with La Fabrique du Temps Louis Vuitton, reviving the brand under its founder’s name with a renewed focus on small-batch, high-craft pieces—an exciting second chapter in the legacy of one of horology’s most respected independent voices.
