1973 Rolex Cellini 4014 - Orange Mirror Dial

The dial is the whole story

This 1973 Rolex Cellini is defined by its orange pink foil dial. It shifts between warm salmon, copper, and soft pink depending on the light, and it does so without looking loud. It is not a standard champagne or silver Cellini. It has presence.

In this size and case shape, the color carries the watch.

Why this version matters

Foil dials from the early 1970s are a different category within the Cellini line. They feel experimental without being gimmicky. The brushed texture underneath the color keeps it grounded, while the small rectangular case keeps proportions tight and balanced.

Paired with the 18k yellow gold case, the dial warms up rather than clashes. The original strap and matching gold buckle complete the watch as it would have been sold.

What you need to know

Condition is good and consistent with age. The case shows normal wear. The dial has visible dust beneath it and would benefit from cleaning. Mechanically, it is running well after passing by our test bench.

The strap and gold buckle are original.

A small Cellini with real personality

This is not a large watch and it is not trying to be one. The appeal sits in the dial and the era it represents. Compact, warm, and slightly off standard Rolex dress language.

For someone who appreciates early 1970s design and wants a Cellini that feels different from the usual champagne or white examples, this one delivers color and character in a restrained format.

History

The Cellini line — named after Renaissance goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini — is Rolex's dress watch offering, and it operates on entirely different logic than the sport and tool watches the brand is famous for. No date window, no rotating bezel, no crown guards. Just case, dial, and movement.

Introduced in the late 1960s, Cellini watches are exclusively 18-karat gold and are powered by manual-wind movements. The collection covers an extraordinary range of case shapes across its history: round, oval, rectangular, cushion, asymmetric, and the distinctive Cestello oval — all sharing a commitment to slim proportions and refined finishing that stands apart from anything else in the Rolex catalog.

References span from the early 3800-series oval cases of the late 1960s and early 1970s through the square 4233 Danaos of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Dials range from brushed champagne and silver sunburst to red and blue vignette, white Arabic, and foil patterns that no longer exist in current production. For collectors who want Rolex craftsmanship without the sport-watch aesthetic, Cellini is the answer — and it remains one of the most underappreciated categories in the entire vintage Rolex universe.
