1986 Rolex Day-Date 36 18038 - 18K Yellow Gold Matte Blue Diamond Dial

Details

A Dial Unlike Any Other

The Day-Date 18038 is a cornerstone reference, representing the perfect blend of classic 36mm proportions and modern functionality with its quickset date feature. While any solid gold Day-Date makes a statement, this example stands apart with its factory matte blue diamond dial. This sought-after configuration provides a deep, non-reflective color that serves as a striking backdrop for the factory-set diamond hour markers, offering a distinct and sophisticated look.

An Unpolished Case With A Story To Tell

This is an honest, unpolished example that carries the story of its life in its metal. The sharp lines and original factory finishing are preserved, indicating a watch that was worn with care but never subjected to a polishing wheel. The solid 18k gold President bracelet shows wear consistent with its age, complementing the case's condition. The centerpiece remains the dial, whose rare color and diamond setting provide a character that sets it apart from more common Day-Date configurations.

Honest Wear, Exceptional Preservation

The unpolished 18k yellow gold case shows consistent scratching and light marks appropriate for a watch from its era, but retains its original sharp lines and factory profile. The matte blue dial is well-preserved. The President bracelet is in good condition, with a level of stretch consistent with its age. As with every watch we offer, this piece has been verified as mechanically sound and is ready to wear.

For The Collector Who Values Character

This Day-Date is for the collector who values rarity and honest condition. It offers the undeniable presence of a solid gold Rolex President, elevated by a seldom-seen factory dial configuration. It’s a watch that is both a status symbol and a conversation starter, perfect for someone who appreciates the combination of a classic reference with a distinctive and uncommon dial.

History

The Day-Date was introduced in 1956 as the most prestigious reference in the Rolex catalog, and it has held that position without interruption for nearly seventy years. It was the first watch to display both the day of the week spelled out in full and the date simultaneously, and Rolex ensured from the beginning that it would only be offered in precious metals — gold and platinum exclusively. The President bracelet, developed specifically for this reference, completed a package that was designed to sit at the top of what Swiss watchmaking could offer. From its first year of production, it was associated with political leaders, royalty, and figures whose choice of watch carried meaning.

The design achieved something rare in watch history: it established a visual identity so complete that it required almost no revision over the following decades. The case shape, the cyclops lens, the President bracelet, and the day window at twelve o'clock were all present at launch and remain defining features today. What changed across generations was the movement, which improved progressively through the Cal. 1555, the 1556, and eventually the series of quick-set movements that made the calendar functions significantly more practical to use.

Among collectors, the vintage Day-Date holds a position defined by both rarity and weight. The combination of gold construction and complex dial options — stone dials, wood dials, champlevé enamel — means that specific configurations can be genuinely difficult to source. The Presidential associations of the reference add a layer of cultural significance that no amount of modern marketing can replicate. For the collector who wants a watch that occupies the highest tier of the Rolex hierarchy without any ambiguity, the Day-Date in any of its gold executions is the correct choice.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
