The Final Evolution Of The Original GMT

The reference 16700 marks the end of an era as the final iteration of the original GMT-Master line. Produced alongside the GMT-Master II, the 16700 was built for those who prioritized a slimmer case profile and the practical utility of a quickset date function. This 1996 example captures the model in its most refined state just before it was phased out of the Rolex catalog. It represents a specific moment in the brand's history where professional utility was perfectly balanced with wearable proportions.

Streamlined Design With Maximum Utility

By choosing the all-black bezel, this reference sheds the high-contrast look of its colorful siblings and becomes a focused professional instrument. The monochrome aesthetic highlights the functional nature of the GMT complication and allows the watch to transition seamlessly from travel to a formal environment. It offers the same global tracking capabilities as any other professional Rolex pilot watch but does so in a package that is physically thinner and more balanced on the wrist. For the traveler who values a quickset date for rapid adjustments between time zones, the 16700 remains the most practical choice in the neo-vintage lineup.

Remarkable Integrity And Sharp Geometry

The condition of this example is excellent and shows a level of care that is rare for a tool watch of this age. The stainless steel case remains very sharp with well-defined lug transitions and clear factory finishes still visible. The black dial and bezel insert are flawless, showing no aging or damage. The Oyster bracelet maintains its original tension and shows minimal signs of previous wear. After passing through our test bench, the movement is running strong and is ready for the wrist.

The Definitive Travelers Tool

This watch works because it simplifies the GMT concept into its most efficient form. It provides the prestige and history of the Rolex aviation lineage without the visual noise of the more common configurations. It's a high-functioning tool watch that stays under the radar while offering a level of comfort that modern iterations often struggle to match.

History

In the mid-1950s, Pan American World Airways needed a navigation watch for its pilots flying transatlantic routes — a watch that could track two time zones simultaneously. Rolex delivered the GMT-Master in 1955. The solution was elegant: a 24-hour hand that made one full rotation per day, used in conjunction with a rotating 24-hour graduated bezel to read a second time zone at a glance.

The bicolor "Pepsi" bezel (red and blue) is the most iconic, but Rolex also produced black bezels for this period. The GMT-Master II, introduced in 1983, improved the concept by making the local hour hand independently settable — a significant upgrade for frequent travelers who reset their watch at every stop.

References 16700 (original GMT-Master, 1989–1999) and 16710 (GMT-Master II, 1989–2007) both use the caliber 3175 and 3185 movements respectively and represent the mature, refined expressions of a watch type that Rolex invented. These are proper instruments that look exactly like what they are.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
