2001 Rolex GMT-Master II 16710 – Stainless Steel Black Bezel

The Professional Monochrome Tool

The Reference 16710 represents the peak of the classic GMT-Master II silhouette. This is the iteration that perfected the balance between a professional tool and a comfortable daily wearer, featuring the independent jump-hour hand that allows for seamless time zone changes. While other models rely on bright bezel colors, the all-black execution puts the focus entirely on the legibility of the dial and the iconic Oyster case geometry. This is a low-profile Rolex meant for those who find themselves changing timezones often.

Sophisticated Design Focused On Utility

The all-black execution highlights the technical nature of the watch. The aluminum bezel insert provides a specific tactile feel and visual depth that defines this era of Rolex production. It features a sapphire crystal and a high-functioning movement that allows the wearer to track a second time zone with precision. This 2001 example comes from a period where the GMT had fully evolved into a modern and reliable traveler's watch while maintaining the classic proportions that are highly sought after today.

Sharp Case Integrity And Bracelet Tension

The overall condition is very good, showing a case that has been well-maintained and retains its strong original lines. The black bezel insert is clean, and the dial remains flawless. The matching Oyster bracelet is in very good shape, showing proper tension and minimal signs of stretch from previous use. After passing our test bench, the automatic movement is running strong and is mechanically sound for daily wear.

The Definitive Daily Driver

This watch is the ideal choice for a traveler who values the ability to track multiple time zones but prefers a watch that integrates seamlessly into a professional wardrobe. It offers the same high-level mechanical utility as any other GMT II but does so in a package that stays under the radar.

History

In the mid-1950s, Pan American World Airways needed a navigation watch for its pilots flying transatlantic routes — a watch that could track two time zones simultaneously. Rolex delivered the GMT-Master in 1955. The solution was elegant: a 24-hour hand that made one full rotation per day, used in conjunction with a rotating 24-hour graduated bezel to read a second time zone at a glance.

The bicolor "Pepsi" bezel (red and blue) is the most iconic, but Rolex also produced black bezels for this period. The GMT-Master II, introduced in 1983, improved the concept by making the local hour hand independently settable — a significant upgrade for frequent travelers who reset their watch at every stop.

References 16700 (original GMT-Master, 1989–1999) and 16710 (GMT-Master II, 1989–2007) both use the caliber 3175 and 3185 movements respectively and represent the mature, refined expressions of a watch type that Rolex invented. These are proper instruments that look exactly like what they are.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
