When Audemars Piguet Was A Jeweler

Before the Royal Oak changed the landscape of modern watchmaking, Audemars Piguet built its reputation on producing watches of exceptional elegance and complexity. This Ellipse is a perfect artifact from that era, representing a time when the brand operated as both a watchmaker and a jeweler at the highest level. The design is a seamless integration of case, dial, and bracelet, executed entirely in precious metal. It's a testament to the brand's pre-sports watch heritage and its mastery of form.

Texture, Light, And White Gold

This example stands out for its specific combination of materials and finishing. The entire watch is crafted from 18K white gold, giving it a substantial feel and a cool, understated tone. The bezel is factory-set with diamonds that are integrated directly into the case shape, creating a clean frame for the dial. The dial itself, with its Pave Etched Sun pattern, is the centerpiece. It catches the light from every angle, creating a great sense of depth and texture. To top it off, beautiful blue sapphire gems are used for the hour markers.

A Well-Preserved Example

The watch is in very good overall condition. The 18K white gold case appears unpolished and the integrated bracelet is well-preserved, showing minimal signs of wear for its age. The bracelet remains fluid on the wrist. As with every watch we offer, this piece has been verified as mechanically sound and is ready to wear.

Beyond The Hype Of Steel

This piece is for the collector who understands the deep history of Audemars Piguet beyond a single reference. It offers a level of craft and design conviction that is increasingly rare. While the market remains focused on steel sports models, watches like this represent a different kind of value based on precious materials, hand-finishing, and a design language that blurs the line between a timepiece and a piece of jewelry. It's a confident statement for someone who values artistry over trends.

History

Before the Royal Oak redefined the brand for a new generation, Audemars Piguet spent over a century establishing itself as one of the finest dress watch manufacturers in the world. Founded in 1875 in Le Brassus, the manufacture built its reputation on the strength of its movement finishing and its willingness to produce cases and bracelets of exceptional complexity. The dress watches produced from the 1950s through the 1980s represent the purest expression of this heritage — elegant shapes in precious metal, powered by slim hand-wound or automatic calibres, designed for clients who understood the difference between a luxury watch and a mass-produced one.

The range of case designs that Audemars Piguet explored during this period is remarkable. Ellipses, cushion cases, tonneau shapes, and slim round cases were all produced in yellow gold, white gold, and platinum, often with integrated bracelets that required the same level of engineering as the movements inside them. Stone dials, diamond-set bezels, and textured gold finishes were standard options rather than exceptions. The brand operated as both a watch manufacturer and a jeweler simultaneously, producing pieces that blurred the line between the two disciplines in a way that very few competitors could replicate.

Among collectors, the vintage Audemars Piguet dress watches occupy a position of growing significance. The market's focus on the Royal Oak has meant that the broader catalog remains comparatively undervalued relative to the quality of the manufacturing. Examples in precious metal with unusual dial configurations or integrated bracelets offer a level of craft and design conviction that is difficult to find at equivalent price points from any other manufacturer of comparable stature.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
