A Classic Form, Reimagined

The rectangular dress watch is a pillar of twentieth-century design. While one brand may dominate the conversation, many others offered their own interpretation of the form. This Baume & Mercier Baumatic from the 1980s is a prime example. It takes the classic tank-style case and renders it in solid 18k white gold, a cooler and more understated choice than traditional yellow gold. Paired with a self-winding movement, it delivers timeless elegance with modern convenience.

A Study In Texture And Contrast

This example stands out for its execution. The dial is a deep, blackish-blue with a guilloche texture that adds visual depth without being distracting. The cool tones of the dial and case are complemented by silver dauphine hands and a blue cabochon crown, a subtle nod to the design's Parisian roots. A symmetrically placed date window at six o'clock adds a layer of practicality, making it a complete and well-considered design.

Exceptional, Untouched Condition

This piece is in great cosmetic and untouched condition. The 18k white gold case is free of any notable scratches. The dial and crystal are clean and clear, showing no marks or imperfections. It comes fitted on its original black leather strap, complete with the original signed 18k white gold buckle. All parts are original to the watch, including the dial, crown, movement, and caseback. As with every watch we offer, this piece has been verified as mechanically sound and is ready to wear.

An Alternative To The Obvious Choice

This Baumatic is for the person who appreciates the classic tank form but wants something more distinctive. It offers a similar level of refinement and heritage in a less common package. The combination of white gold, a textured blue dial, and an automatic movement creates a wearing experience that is both elegant and effortless. It is a confident alternative that sets itself apart in a quiet, intelligent way.

History

Baume & Mercier traces its origins to 1830 in Switzerland, making it one of the older names in watchmaking. Part of the Richemont group since the late 1980s, the brand produced elegant dress watches throughout the 1970s through 1990s in 18-karat gold — pieces like the TV Integrated Dress, the Tiffany-double-stamped examples, and the Shogun — that represent a style of refined Swiss watchmaking that has largely disappeared from current production. Our vintage examples in yellow and rose gold are understated in the way that genuinely well-made things tend to be.
