Bucherer – Gold-Plated Tiger Eye Dial

Details

Stone-forward, vintage character

This vintage Bucherer from the 1960s–1970s leans fully into what makes these watches appealing in the first place: the stone. The tiger eye dial here is well cut, with strong chatoyancy that shifts noticeably as the light moves across it — exactly what you want to see in a good example.

Why this piece works

The tiger eye dial is the centerpiece. The cut has good depth and movement, giving the watch life on the wrist rather than reading flat or dull. No two angles look the same, and that natural variation is the entire appeal of stone-dial watches like this.

The 32mm gold-plated case keeps the focus where it belongs — on the dial — without overpowering it. Paired with a manual-wind movement, the watch stays slim and traditional, aligning well with the period it comes from.

Condition, clearly stated

The case presents cleanly, with no notable scratches or dings, and the crystal is free of marks. The dial shows visible cracking, including a line running roughly from 3 to 5 o’clock and a smaller crack near 1 o’clock. These are honest traits seen on many vintage stone dials and do not take away from the overall visual impact or movement of the tiger eye.

The watch is running well and functioning as it should, making it an easy, wearable vintage piece.

A stone watch with presence

This Bucherer is a character-rich vintage Bucherer that delivers exactly what collectors look for in tiger eye: motion, warmth, and individuality.

For someone who appreciates stone dials and understands that natural material comes with personality, this is an engaging, wearable example that still shows beautifully on the wrist.

History

Bucherer was founded in 1888 in Lucerne and built its name less as a flashy manufacturer and more as a serious Swiss jeweler–retailer with close ties to the brands it sold. For much of the 20th century, Bucherer produced watches under its own name using movements and cases from top-tier Swiss suppliers, often prioritizing materials and design over technical spectacle.

That approach shows up clearly in their mid-century and 1970s pieces. Stone dials like tiger’s eye, lapis, and onyx weren’t experiments for Bucherer. They were a deliberate aesthetic choice, paired with slim manual-wind movements and restrained case sizes meant to wear like jewelry first and watches second. Many of these watches were sold directly through Bucherer boutiques, often in Europe, which is why they remain relatively scarce in today’s market.

Vintage Bucherer watches don’t trade on hype or mass recognition. They appeal to collectors who care about materials, era-correct design, and subtle originality. When you see a good stone-dial Bucherer, especially one with strong cut and movement in the stone, you’re looking at exactly what the brand did best. Quietly distinctive watches made for people who noticed details before they were trendy.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
