Cartier Must de Tank 590005 - Vermeil Lemon Roman Dial

Details

The Democratization Of An Aristocratic Icon

The Cartier Tank is an absolute monument of horological industrial design, maintaining an unbroken legacy of refinement since its inception in 1917. In the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s, Cartier introduced the "Must de Cartier" line to safely navigate the quartz crisis, reinterpreting the classic Louis Cartier Tank proportions through accessible luxury materials. By utilizing a solid vermeil construction—heavy 18k yellow gold electroplating over a solid .925 sterling silver base—the manufacture allowed a broader class of connoisseurs to participate in the legendary Cartier lifestyle, creating an era-defining accessory that remains a masterclass in elegant, rectangular symmetry.

The Radiant Contrast Of The Lemon Roman Dial

While the Must de Tank catalog is famous for its avant-garde lacquered, wood-grain, and three-tone dials, the "Lemon" Roman dial remains one of the most vibrant and historically pure expressions of the collection. The dial face features a warm, pastel yellow background that matches the tonality of the vermeil casing. This cheerful canvas is anchored cleanly by traditional black-painted Roman numeral hours and an inner chemin de fer (railtrack) minute track. The layout eschews unnecessary text and date displays, prioritizing traditional Parisian symmetry and material interplay to deliver a look that is both unmistakably vintage and effortlessly contemporary.

Preserved Vermeil Architecture With Original Hardware

Condition: Very Good. The rectangular 23x30mm vermeil case has been beautifully preserved, retaining sharp corner facets, crisp case proportions, and clear definition across the integrated lugs. The 18k gold layer remains deep and uniform, showing none of the aggressive silver bleed or edge oxidation that often impacts vintage vermeil pieces from this decade. The caseback details remain distinct, including the full reference number (590005) and serial stamping (170474). The lemon dial is remarkably clean, free of the surface spidering or moisture spotting typical of 1980s compositions. A significant highlight is the inclusion of a premium black leather strap completed by its original Cartier tang buckle. Mechanically, the quartz movement has been bench-tested with a fresh cell, providing high-accuracy, reliable operation.

An Effortless Icon For The Modern Wardrobe

The reference 590005 is a watch built for the individual who values the enduring style of a classical dress silhouette but requires the practicality of a daily driver. Powered by a dependable Swiss quartz movement, it serves as a precise, low-maintenance grab-and-go option that completely eliminates regular winding rituals. Its tailored 23x30mm proportions offer a historic, low-profile fit that hugs the wrist perfectly, sliding seamlessly beneath a formal shirt sleeve or acting as a relaxed sartorial statement with casual attire. It remains an essential cornerstone of vintage Cartier design, delivering immense heritage and nameplate prestige to any sophisticated rotation.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
