Cartier panthere two tone

History

The Panthere de Cartier was introduced in 1983, drawing on the panther motif that had been part of Cartier's visual identity since the early twentieth century. Where the Santos was angular and the Tank rectangular, the Panthere offered a square case with a fully integrated bracelet that curved around the wrist like a second skin.

The two-tone yellow gold and steel combination — links alternating between the two metals — is the defining Panthere aesthetic, though gold-only versions also exist. Quartz-powered and available in 22mm (small) and 27mm (large/medium) cases, the Panthere dominated the luxury watch conversation in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It has since become one of the clearest signifiers of that era done right.
