The Cartier Santos is widely considered the first purpose-built wristwatch in history. Louis Cartier created the original model in 1904 for his friend, the aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont, who needed a way to check the time without removing his hands from the controls of his aircraft. The square case and exposed bezel screws that defined that first piece became two of the most enduring design signatures in watchmaking. This reference 2961 from the 1980s is the direct descendant of that original, updated for the era of the integrated luxury sports watch.
A Definitive Two-Tone Execution
This example represents the classic configuration of the Santos "Carree" from its most popular era. The two-tone steel and 18K yellow gold construction defined luxury watchmaking in the 1980s, and the Santos was at the forefront of that trend. The crisp white dial with Roman numerals and yellow gold bezel create a look that is unmistakably Cartier. The case wears exceptionally well, offering a distinct presence without being oversized.

Absolutely unreal experience. Found them from Facebook. Figured I’d browse the site. Fell in love with a patek, texted them, and they (specifically David) were so amazing and easy to chat with about options and inventory, process etc. Came in to pick up the watch - man, as you probably know - you cannot understate how great their selection is. That’s really one of the best parts as well. The service is great; they treat their clients great, prices are very good - but the curation is another huge stand out part. Anyway - these fellas were so great when we came in, that my wife was determined that we buy a watch for her, - you know just to help the business. Not for her, she insists, but because of how great the guys at the shop were. And I agreed so I obliged. :P It’s honestly a 10/10 shop. As we speak they are reworking both our watches to fit our bracelet and I’ll add photos when I pick up the watches. Heck, 11/10. They’re that good. Go there, you will not regret it!
