Refined sport-luxury, done right

This vintage Chopard St. Moritz Automatic from the 1990s is a clean expression of the model at its most wearable. Executed in stainless steel and 18k yellow gold, it carries the unmistakable St. Moritz design language — integrated bracelet, sculpted case, and screw-accented bezel — in a configuration that feels both familiar and quietly elevated.

Balanced, composed, and easy to live with.

Why this configuration works

The St. Moritz represents Chopard’s early take on refined sport-luxury, and two-tone automatic examples like this sit at the heart of the collection. The white dial keeps the watch crisp and versatile, while applied Roman numerals and a date window at six o’clock add just enough complication without cluttering the layout.

The integrated steel and gold bracelet flows naturally into the case, reinforcing the sculptural design that made the St. Moritz feel ahead of its time when introduced — and still relevant today. It’s a configuration that highlights proportion and execution rather than excess, which is exactly why it wears so well decades later.

Preserved as intended

The watch presents in excellent, excellent condition, both cosmetically and mechanically. The case and bracelet remain well preserved, the dial is clean and evenly aged, and the overall presentation reflects careful ownership.

Powered by its automatic movement, the watch is fully functional and keeps excellent time. All components are original, including the signed Chopard crown, original dial, movement, case, and caseback.

A clean, confident St. Moritz

This isn’t an experimental or overworked variation — it’s a strong, well-executed St. Moritz that does exactly what the model was meant to do. Elegant enough for formal settings, versatile enough for everyday wear, and distinctive without trying to stand apart.

A solid vintage choice for many different reasons, and a reminder of why the St. Moritz remains one of Chopard’s most enduring designs.

History

Chopard was founded in 1860 by Louis-Ulysse Chopard in Sonvilier, Switzerland. Initially recognized for high-precision pocket watches and chronometers, the brand gained early traction among European nobility and the Russian Imperial Court. By the mid-20th century, however, Chopard was at a crossroads. In 1963, the company was acquired by Karl Scheufele III, a member of a German watchmaking dynasty, ushering in a new era of creativity, vertical integration, and international growth.

Under the Scheufele family’s leadership, Chopard evolved into a maison known for both fine jewelry and watchmaking, with two distinct pillars: Haute Horlogerie for men and high jewelry timepieces for women. The brand became particularly well known for its Happy Diamonds collection (launched in 1976) and later its in-house L.U.C. mechanical calibers (introduced in the late 1990s).

But before L.U.C. and alongside Happy Diamonds came St. Moritz—a pivotal milestone in Chopard’s horological journey.

The St. Moritz Collection: A Pioneering Sport-Luxury Icon

Launched in 1980, the St. Moritz was Chopard’s first sports watch and notably its first timepiece made in stainless steel—a bold move for a luxury brand more accustomed to gold and gem-set creations. It was envisioned by a young Karl-Friedrich Scheufele (son of Karl III), who today is Co-President of Chopard. His goal: create a modern, luxurious sports watch that could withstand active lifestyles without compromising elegance.

Named after the glitzy Swiss alpine resort town of St. Moritz, the watch embodied the jet-set glamour and athletic prestige of the era. Its integrated bracelet, tonneau-shaped bezel with exposed screws, and water-resistant case placed it firmly within the emerging “luxury sports watch” genre—alongside contemporaries like the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak (1972) and Patek Philippe Nautilus (1976).

Over the years, the St. Moritz line was produced in a range of materials—steel, two-tone, and full gold, and in both quartz and automatic versions, including chronographs, moonphases, and diamond-set variants. Its versatility and distinctive look earned it a cult following, particularly among collectors of 1980s neo-vintage pieces.

However, by the early 2000s, the St. Moritz was quietly discontinued. It wouldn’t be until 2020 that Chopard revisited the concept, reinterpreting its legacy with the Alpine Eagle collection—a modern, refined sport-luxury line inspired directly by the original St. Moritz, and again championed by Karl-Friedrich Scheufele.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
