Corum 55522 - Onyx and Coral Dial

Trade In

The dial is already rare. Then there’s the lug construction

This Corum from the 1970s exists for one reason: materials. Onyx paired with natural coral is one of the rarest dial executions Corum ever produced. Stone dials were difficult enough on their own. Coral made things exponentially harder. Most never made it out of production intact, and even fewer survived decades of wear and service.

What pushes this example further is the triple lug construction. The two spring bars per side setup is rarely seen and was used on a very small number of Corum jewelry references. It was engineered for stability and balance, but it added complexity and cost. Many were later simplified or altered. Seeing this lug configuration still present matters.

You can tell Corum was having fun with this one

You are no longer allowed to use coral as it is an endangered material, making this watch even more special and impossible to replicate in todays world. The triple lug design reinforces that this was not a standard production watch. It was a high jewelry execution built without shortcuts during Corum’s most experimental period.

What you need to know before wearing it

The coral dial has a visible crack between four and five o’clock, but the onyx is in great shape. The case shows wear consistent with age. The crystal is in good condition. The original hardware shows oxidation consistent with age. The watch has been serviced and is running well after passing by our test bench.

None were known to survive, until now

This is not a condition driven piece. It is a rarity driven one. The onyx and coral dial alone places it far outside normal vintage offerings. The surviving triple lug construction confirms it was built at the highest level Corum was operating at in the 1970s.

It is for someone who values unusual materials, obscure executions, and watches that were never meant to be common. It's exactly what a stone dial Corum from this era should be.

Every watch we offer has been authenticated and mechanically looked over to ensure immediate usability.

History

Corum was founded in 1955 in La Chaux‑de‑Fonds by René Bannwart and his uncle Gaston Ries, who chose the name from the Latin “quorum” to signify decision‑making power . The first Corum watches appeared in 1956, and in 1966 René’s son Jean‑René joined the firm, steering it toward avant‑garde designs . From the beginning, Corum distinguished itself by producing distinctive watches that combined technical ingenuity with visual flair. Notable early models include the Golden Tube of 1957, which used a sliding gold case , and the Chinese Hat of 1958. The brand also gained attention with the first Admiral’s Cup watch in 1960, featuring a square case and engraved sailboat.
Over the following decades Corum continued to innovate. The Coin Watch of 1964 placed a movement inside a hollowed‑out $20 gold coin . In 1980 Corum introduced the Golden Bridge, a watch whose baguette‑shaped movement was suspended within a transparent case, showcasing its hand‑engraved bridges . The Admiral’s Cup was redesigned in 1983 with a dodecagonal bezel and nautical pennant hour markers . These and other creations have given Corum a reputation for originality and have secured its place among independent Swiss watchmakers.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
