DeLaneau - Opal and Onyx Dial

Trade In

This is jewelry watchmaking done seriously

DeLaneau has always lived in a different lane. This piece makes that clear immediately. The watch is built around stone, not around mechanics, and everything else follows from there. At 30 millimeters, the case is compact and intentional, designed to frame the dial rather than compete with it.

The opal and onyx dial is the focus. Shifting color from the opal paired against the depth of onyx gives the watch movement even when it is still.

Why this configuration matters

Stone dials are difficult on their own. Combining two different stones in one dial raises the stakes significantly. Opal is fragile and unpredictable. Onyx is unforgiving and shows everything. The fact that this dial has survived intact is what matters most.

The diamond set white gold bezel reinforces the jewelry first approach without overwhelming the watch. The fully white gold bracelet keeps everything cohesive and balanced rather than decorative for the sake of it. Quartz is correct here. It allows the case to stay slim and keeps attention exactly where it belongs.

This is not a mass produced watch. It was never meant to be.

What you need to know before wearing it

Condition is very good overall. The quartz movement is running properly. There is a visible scratch on the crystal around six thirty that should be noted. There is also a small speck visible on the dial near ten o’clock. Both are visible only on close inspection. The case and bracelet are otherwise in good shape for its age.

Why this watch still stands out

This is for someone who understands that some of the most interesting watches were never about complications or brand recognition. They were about materials and execution.

It works as a true jewelry watch that still feels intentional and wearable. Rare in practice, visually rich, and far outside the standard vintage conversation. A piece you do not see twice.

Every watch we offer has been authenticated and mechanically looked over to ensure immediate usability.

History

DeLaneau is a Swiss watchmaker founded in 1949 in Biel/Bienne, established with a clear focus on creating refined, high-end timepieces specifically for women. From the start, the brand positioned itself around craftsmanship and design, blending traditional Swiss watchmaking with jewelry techniques and decorative arts. Rather than chasing scale, DeLaneau built its reputation through small production runs, careful finishing, and a strong emphasis on aesthetics.

Over the years, the company became especially known for its use of métiers d’art, particularly hand-painted and grand feu enamel dials, gem-setting, and sculpted cases. Many pieces are made in limited numbers or as custom commissions, with artisans treating each watch more like a miniature artwork than a standard catalog model. This approach gave the brand a distinct identity in a space where women’s watches were often secondary to men’s collections.

In the early 2000s, DeLaneau moved its headquarters to Geneva and expanded its in-house artistic capabilities, continuing to develop decorative complications and more elaborate dial work. Today, it remains a niche name within haute horlogerie, valued by collectors for its craftsmanship, individuality, and boutique-level production rather than mass-market visibility.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
