Patek Philippe Ellipse 4266 White Gold Onyx Dial

Trade In

A magnificent Ellipse in excellent condition

The Golden Ellipse only works when everything is reduced to essentials, and this reference shows that idea at its cleanest. It was designed as a complete object rather than a movement with a strap added later. It wears exactly as a proper 1970s dress watch should. Light, balanced, and intentional.

The onyx dial sets the tone immediately. Deep black, perfectly flat, and unforgiving in the best way.

Why this configuration matters

Onyx dials were never casual choices at Patek Philippe. They were difficult to cut, easy to crack, and offered no margin for error. Most did not survive decades of wear or service. Finding one that remains intact and clean is the exception.

The fully integrated 18k white gold bracelet and bezel complete the design. This is not an Ellipse adapted to a bracelet. It was conceived this way from the start.

To add on top of the excellent condition, this example comes full set, with original box and papers in tact from the original owners.

What you need to know before wearing it

Condition is excellent overall. The onyx dial is perfect. The hands are clean. The case is very well preserved. The bracelet remains tight and presents beautifully. The crystal is in good condition.

There is a very small scratch between three and four o’clock on the crystal that requires great scrutiny to notice. The watch comes full set with its original box and papers.

A beautiful expression of coherency

This is not a loud or complicated Patek Philippe. It is a study in restraint and execution. The kind of watch that rewards people who understand design rather than chase size or features. It is truly a piece that feels like a complete object rather than a case with an afterthought bracelet.

It works as a true dress watch or as a cornerstone for a collection built around form and material. Rare in practice, disciplined in design, and increasingly difficult to replace in this condition.

Every watch we offer has been authenticated and mechanically looked over to ensure immediate usability.

Bracelet extension, cutting, or sizing is available upon request through our professional in-house jewelers.

History

Patek Philippe Ellipse – A Timeless Icon of Elegant Simplicity

The Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, introduced in 1968, is one of the most distinct and enduring models in the brand’s history. A celebration of refined proportions, the Ellipse was revolutionary not through technical complexity, but through its harmonious and minimalist design. The watch was created during an era of bold experimentation in form and style — and yet the Ellipse stood apart.

Origins and Design Philosophy

The first Patek Philippe Ellipse was launched in 1968, designed by Jean-Daniel Rubeli, then head of design at Patek Philippe. Its most defining feature is its case shape — an ellipse based on the ancient mathematical concept known as the "golden ratio", which has been associated with aesthetic harmony in art and architecture for centuries. This concept guided the dimensions of the watch’s case, creating a shape that felt both natural and luxurious on the wrist.

  • The first Ellipse was crafted in 18k yellow gold and paired with a deep blue sunburst dial, typically worn on a leather strap.
  • The earliest references include models like the Ref. 3548, with a thin profile and ultra-minimalist dial — no numerals, no date — just the essentials, underscoring the watch's understated elegance.
  • These early Ellipses were powered by ultra-thin mechanical movements, including the caliber 23-300.

Integrated Gold Ellipse Models

While the original Ellipse was introduced on a leather strap, integrated gold bracelet models began to emerge in the 1970s and became more prominent through the 1980s. These versions featured beautifully handcrafted gold bracelets that seamlessly flowed into the case — emphasizing the smooth lines and graceful proportions of the Ellipse’s design.

  • Models like the Ref. 3738, Ref. 3838, and Ref. 3604 became staples of this era, many of which were produced in yellow gold, white gold, and seldom seen in platinum, often with diamond indices, onyx dials, or rare stone dials like lapis lazuli and malachite.
  • These integrated bracelet watches elevated the Ellipse from a dress piece to a bold statement of personal style and luxury.

Why the Patek Philippe Ellipse Is Important

  • Design Purity: The Ellipse was a radical departure from round and square watches. Its mathematically inspired proportions created a case shape that was instantly recognizable and visually balanced.

  • Ultra-Thin Elegance: Many vintage Ellipse models feature ultra-thin mechanical movements, making them incredibly sleek on the wrist and emphasizing Patek Philippe’s technical mastery.
  • Symbol of Understated Luxury: Unlike more ostentatious watches of the time, the Ellipse was a quiet expression of sophistication — often worn by collectors, artists, and connoisseurs who valued discretion over flash.
  • Enduring Legacy: Over the decades, Patek Philippe continued to produce the Ellipse in limited quantities, with modern versions staying true to the original design. It remains a symbol of timeless elegance and restrained luxury.

Patek Philippe gold watch History

Founded in 1839 by Antoni Patek and Adrien Philippe in Geneva, Patek Philippe has established itself as a paragon of Swiss watchmaking. The brand's dedication to precision and artistry has resulted in the creation of some of the most complex and revered timepieces in horological history. Notably, the Henry Graves Supercomplication, completed in 1933, stood as the world's most complicated mechanical watch for over 50 years, featuring 24 distinct functions, including a celestial chart of New York's night sky.

The Golden Era of Integrated Gold Watches

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Patek Philippe introduced a series of integrated gold watches that would become icons of the era. These models featured solid 18k yellow gold cases and bracelets, seamlessly integrated into a single cohesive design. Among the most notable was the Patek Philippe Calatrava. This timepiece exemplified the brand's commitment to elegance and innovation, offering a minimalist dial paired with a distinctive integrated bracelet

Another standout from this period was the Patek Philippe Golden Ellipse, introduced in 1968. Its unique elliptical case, inspired by the Golden Section—a principle of aesthetic proportion dating back to ancient Greece—set it apart from traditional watch designs. The Golden Ellipse became a symbol of luxury and sophistication, embraced by the jet-set elite of the 1970s.

Patek Philippe's vintage integrated gold watches are sought after for several reasons:

  • Timeless Design: The seamless integration of case and bracelet offers a harmonious aesthetic that remains relevant across generations.
  • Exclusivity: Produced in limited quantities, these timepieces were often bespoke or retailed through exclusive channels, enhancing their rarity and desirability.
  • Craftsmanship: Each watch was meticulously crafted, reflecting Patek Philippe's unwavering commitment to quality and precision.
  • Cultural Significance: Worn by influential figures and featured in high-profile settings, these watches became symbols of status and refinement.
  • Today, these vintage timepieces are highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs, not only for their aesthetic appeal but also for their embodiment of a golden era in watchmaking.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
