1989 Rolex Datejust 16233 - Purple Dial

Details

An unexpected story of color

This Rolex Datejust Ref. 16233 takes one of the brand’s most familiar silhouettes and quietly flips the script. At its core, it’s a classic two-tone Datejust, but the matte purple dial gives this example a personality you simply don’t see every day.

Why this configuration stands out

The dial is the point of distinction. Purple is an uncommon choice in the Datejust lineup, especially in a matte finish. The result is rich and expressive without drifting into novelty, a detail that rewards a closer look rather than shouting from across the room.

That dial is balanced by a yellow gold bezel and two-tone handset, keeping the watch grounded in classic Datejust territory. The overall effect is familiar but elevated, blending tradition with a color choice that feels confidently off-catalog.

Condition, clearly stated

The watch presents in excellent overall condition. The case and lugs remain unpolished, retaining their original shape and definition. The bezel and center links have kept their deep yellow tone, adding warmth without appearing worn down or overworked.

The dial is clean and evenly preserved, with matching tritium in the hands and plots. All components are original, and the watch is fully functional, keeping great time.

A Datejust with real character

This isn’t a loud reinterpretation of the Datejust — it’s a subtle departure from the expected. A familiar Rolex reference, distinguished by a rare dial choice and honest preservation.

For someone who appreciates the Datejust but wants one that doesn’t blend into the crowd, this Ref. 16233 offers exactly that: classic Rolex DNA, with a dial that changes the conversation.

History

The Datejust debuted in 1945 as Rolex’s 40th‑anniversary timepiece.  It combined the brand’s major innovations — a waterproof Oyster case, self‑winding Perpetual rotor and chronometer‑certified movement — and added a new feature: a date window that automatically advanced at midnight.  This simple, yet practical display marked the first time a wristwatch offered a self‑winding movement with a date indication in a dial aperture.  The watch was launched on the Jubilee bracelet, designed for comfort and flexibility, and its fluted bezel underscored its dressier appeal.Rolex continued to refine the Datejust after its launch.  In 1953 the company added a magnifying Cyclops lens over the date to improve legibility.  The mid‑century models maintained the original 36 mm case size and time‑only simplicity while introducing new dial colours and precious metal options.  The model eventually expanded into smaller and larger sizes and, in 1957, the Lady‑Datejust provided the same functionality in a watch designed for women.Through its long production run the Datejust has remained a cornerstone of the Rolex line because it blends practicality with versatile styling.  Its combination of automatic winding, chronometer accuracy and instantaneous date change serves everyday needs without excess ornamentation.  The enduring form, an Oyster case with screw‑down crown and bracelet — resists moisture and dust.  Collectors appreciate early Datejusts for their historical significance and the way later iterations carry forward the original design language.  Even today the Datejust remains a reference point for a classic, reliable wristwatch.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
