Piaget Mini Polo 861 C 606 - 18K Yellow Gold Onyx & Diamond

Details

High Jewelry Meets The Integrated Bracelet

Introduced in 1979, the Piaget Polo was a characteristically extravagant answer to the steel luxury sports watches of the era. Piaget leaned into its heritage as a jeweler, creating a timepiece that felt sculpted from a single block of gold, blurring the lines between a watch and a bracelet. This Mini Polo from the 1980s captures the peak of that design ethos. It's a pure expression of a specific moment in luxury, where precious metal and an integrated design were paramount.

A Study In Gold, Onyx, And Diamond

This example stands out for its factory diamond-set configuration. The bracelet is constructed of alternating brushed gold gadroons and separate links which are fully set with diamonds. This was a costly and uncommon option that elevates the watch significantly. The black lacquer dial is punctuated by onyx gadroons, creating a seamless visual flow from the case through the bracelet.

Preserved In Excellent Condition

The watch is in excellent overall condition. The 18K yellow gold case and integrated bracelet are well-preserved, showing only light signs of careful wear. The black lacquer and onyx dial is clean, and all factory-set diamonds are secure in their settings. The complex construction of the Polo bracelet remains in top form, a critical factor for these references. As with every watch we offer, this piece has been verified as mechanically sound and is ready to wear.

A Statement Of 1980s Confidence

This piece is best understood as wearable art from a definitive era of design. Its discreet proportions allow the combination of solid gold, onyx, and diamonds to make a strong statement. It works for someone who appreciates the intersection of high jewelry and horology and wants a piece that is both a status symbol and a piece of design history. It's a confident choice that feels just as relevant today.

History

The Piaget Polo was introduced in 1979 and represented one of the most significant departures from the brand's established identity as a manufacturer of ultra-thin movements for third-party cases. Named after the equestrian sport that had long been associated with European aristocratic leisure, the Polo was designed as an integrated sports watch for the luxury market — a direct response to the success that Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe were achieving with their own integrated steel references. Piaget's answer was characteristically more extravagant: a rounded case with a deeply integrated bracelet, offered from the outset in precious metal with dial options that emphasized the brand's jewelry heritage.

The Polo's defining design element is the continuous relationship between the case and bracelet. The individual links are designed to follow the curvature of the wrist without creating any visible transition between the watch and its band, an effect that requires a level of engineering precision that few manufacturers have matched. The rounded case shape and the absence of sharp angles give the Polo a softer visual character than the octagonal sports watches that preceded it, making it simultaneously more accessible and more overtly luxurious. It was designed to be worn at every occasion, and its proportions allow it to function as a dress watch in a way that the more aggressively designed sports references cannot.

For collectors, the vintage Polo — particularly in yellow gold from the 1980s — represents the apex of Piaget's design ambition during the period when the brand was most directly engaged with the luxury sports watch category. The condition of the integrated bracelet is the primary factor in determining the value of any given example, as the complexity of the link construction makes restoration difficult and replacement costly. Examples that have retained their original finishing and structural integrity without excessive stretching or polishing command strong premiums and are genuinely difficult to source in the current market.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
