Piaget Piaget 13427 - Yellow Gold, Hobnail Dial

Trade In

Texture Does The Work Here

This Piaget leans entirely on surface and proportion. The champagne hobnail dial immediately sets the tone, catching light in a way flat dials never do. The inclusion of an automatic movement by Piaget is something seldom seen from this era. This is a dress watch built around feel rather than complication.

Why This Configuration Matters

The hobnail execution is the point. Piaget carried the pattern from the dial through to the 18k yellow gold bezel, which ties the whole watch together visually. It reads cohesive and intentional, not decorative for decoration’s sake.

Automatic movement in a case like this is also worth noting. Piaget managed to keep the watch slim and refined while offering convenience, which is not always a given with their vintage pieces. It sits comfortably in that space between pure dress watch and daily wear.

What You Need To Know Before Wearing It

The case is in good condition with normal wear for age. The dial shows visible smudging and age related dirt. It is noticeable and should be understood clearly. The strap and buckle are aftermarket.

The watch is running at approximately plus thirty eight seconds per day with strong amplitude. It is functional but would benefit from regulation or service if tighter performance is desired.

Why This Watch Still Works

This is a Piaget for someone who values texture and design over perfection. The hobnail work gives it character that most simple dress watches never develop.

It works as a lightweight gold dress watch that feels interesting up close and wears easily day to day. Not pristine, not precious, but honest and very much in line with what Piaget did well in this era.

History

Piaget began in 1874 when Georges‑Édouard Piaget started making high‑quality pocket watch movements in La Côte‑aux‑Fées. His son Timothée expanded the family business in 1911 to produce complete watches, selling them under the Piaget name.  In 1943 the company registered Piaget as a trademark and embarked on a series of technical innovations.  The introduction of the manual‑winding calibre 9P in 1957, only 2 mm thick, established Piaget as a leader in ultra‑thin movements .  Three years later the automatic calibre 12P with a micro‑rotor, at 2.3 mm thick, continued this quest for thinness .  The brand’s motto, “Always do better than necessary,” guided its pursuit of fine craftsmanship and innovation.

Throughout the 1960s Piaget combined watchmaking with jewellery craftsmanship.  The company opened its first boutique in Geneva in 1959 and began creating watches with brightly coloured stone dials and exquisitely woven gold bracelets .  These pieces attracted jet‑set clients and celebrities and established Piaget as a purveyor of glamorous yet technically impressive watches.  Innovations continued with the quartz calibre 7P in 1976 and the introduction of the Polo in 1979, which integrated case and bracelet in solid gold .  Piaget has remained independent within the Richemont Group and continues to explore ultra‑thin watchmaking through collections like the Altiplano.  Collectors value vintage Piaget for the combination of technical finesse and jewellery‑like elegance.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
