An Architectural Outlier In Piaget History

The Piaget Polo is the definitive jet-set watch of the 1970s and 80s, yet this Ref. 7131 defies the model’s established design language. While the Polo is known for its horizontal “speed stripe” gadroons flowing across case and bracelet, this example features a vertical orientation, creating a strikingly different aesthetic. Extensive research across archival catalogs and sales records has yielded no direct parallels, suggesting this is either a bespoke commission or an extremely limited, undocumented variation.

Such a departure aligns with the practices of Piaget during the period, when the maison frequently accommodated special orders and produced pièces uniques or small-run variations for select clients. Within that context, this watch stands as a rare expression of Piaget’s creative freedom at the height of its design experimentation.

The Vertical Gadroon Construction

In this execution, the polished and brushed 18k yellow gold rows run parallel to the arm, completely shifting the visual weight of the watch compared to the classic look. The transition from the integrated 25mm case into the bracelet is seamless, creating a solid "cuff" effect that appears much larger on the wrist then the original dimensions may suggest. Weighing in at over 134 grams of solid gold, it carries a physical density that serves as a reminder of Piaget’s dominance in high-jewelry watchmaking during this era.

Onyx Mineral Depth and Diamond Accents

The rarity of the case construction is matched by the stone dial. This unit is fitted with a natural black onyx dial, offering a deep, light-absorbing finish that only mineral glass can provide. Unlike standard lacquer, the onyx provides a mirror-like reflection that contrasts sharply against the four factory diamond markers. The combination of the vertical gold lines and the pitch-black stone dial creates a monochromatic gold-and-black aesthetic that feels more contemporary than its 1970s origin would suggest.

Condition and Authenticity

This piece is in good vintage condition and presents with the sharp definition of a well-maintained object. The 18k yellow gold case and bracelet have been polished over time, but the distinct vertical ridges remain well-defined and clear. The onyx dial is in great shape, which is critical for stone dial preservation. There is a minor scratch on the crystal at the 10:30 position. After passing through our test bench, the high-grade Piaget quartz movement is functioning as it should.

The Collector’s "Lost" Reference

This watch works because it is a "museum-tier" find for someone who thought they had seen every iteration of the Polo. It exists completely outside the commodity market of standard vintage Piaget, offering a unique geometry that we simply cannot find elsewhere. It is the correct choice for the collector who values archival rarities and wants a heavy-hitting piece of 18k history that no one else in the room will be wearing. It remains an unapologetic and significant statement of 1970s luxury.

We offer professional bracelet extension and cutting services through our in-house jewelers. Extra links or adjustments for smaller wrists are available upon request to ensure a perfect fit.

History

When Piaget unveiled the Polo in 1979, the watch world was still processing what Audemars Piguet had done in 1972 with the Royal Oak. Piaget's answer was the Polo: an integrated bracelet watch with an ultrathin movement housed in a round case, built entirely in 18-karat gold, and priced accordingly.

The Polo was named for the sport that Yves G. Piaget — grandson of the founder — played and sponsored, and the watch carried his sensibility: sporty enough to wear at the polo grounds, refined enough to wear at the dinner that followed. The integrated bracelet, with its alternating polished and brushed surfaces, is one of the most tactile in the industry.

Reference 7661 (the "Jumbo" Polo in 34mm) and the smaller 861 C 701 are the classic references. Available in yellow and white gold, with onyx, diamond, and solid-colored dials, the Polo represents Piaget at full confidence — a manufactory that had spent decades making the thinnest movements in the world, finally putting them in a watch that matched their ambition.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
