Piaget Polo 7131C701 – Yellow Gold Lapis Lazuli & Gold Dial

Details

The banded Lapis legacy

The Piaget Polo is perhaps the most famous expression of 1970s and 80s "Jet Set" luxury. While the solid gold Polo is an icon in its own right, this reference is a rarer execution. The dial features a "banded" Lapis Lazuli design where the horizontal gold bars of the case and bracelet are carried directly through the stone. It creates a seamless visual rhythm that is incredibly difficult to manufacture, as each slice of Lapis must be perfectly fitted between the gold bars. It is a configuration that moves past being a timepiece and functions as a continuous piece of jewelry.

When the band and case are one

On paper the case size may suggest a ladies watch, but the Polo's engineering tells a different story. Because there are no traditional lugs and the watch is essentially a solid, heavy block of 18k yellow gold, it wears significantly larger than its dimensions imply. It carries a massive amount of heft and sits on the wrist like a sculptural cuff rather than a standard watch on a bracelet. This total integration—where the dial, case, and bracelet are treated as one uninterrupted surface—is the hallmark of Piaget’s most confident design era.

Masterful stone preservation

Working with Lapis Lazuli in this "break" or "banded" format is a high-wire act for a jeweler. The stone is notoriously fragile, and fitting it into the gold structure of the Polo requires extreme precision to avoid cracking. This example has been remarkably well-preserved, with the Lapis retaining its deep, royal blue hue and showing no structural issues. The 18k yellow gold remains sharp, with the vertical brushing and polished bars providing the high-contrast finish that made the Polo a favorite of the global elite.

The definitive Polo choice

This is for anyone who appreciates the history of the "Luxury Sport" watch but wants a version that is unapologetically about craft and material. It manages to be unmistakably a Piaget Polo while remaining a rare, boutique-level outlier because of the Lapis inlay. It is a heavy, intentional piece of gold that feels permanent and significant on the wrist. It represents the peak of an era when Piaget was the undisputed king of the integrated jewelry watch.

History

When Piaget unveiled the Polo in 1979, the watch world was still processing what Audemars Piguet had done in 1972 with the Royal Oak. Piaget's answer was the Polo: an integrated bracelet watch with an ultrathin movement housed in a round case, built entirely in 18-karat gold, and priced accordingly.

The Polo was named for the sport that Yves G. Piaget — grandson of the founder — played and sponsored, and the watch carried his sensibility: sporty enough to wear at the polo grounds, refined enough to wear at the dinner that followed. The integrated bracelet, with its alternating polished and brushed surfaces, is one of the most tactile in the industry.

Reference 7661 (the "Jumbo" Polo in 34mm) and the smaller 861 C 701 are the classic references. Available in yellow and white gold, with onyx, diamond, and solid-colored dials, the Polo represents Piaget at full confidence — a manufactory that had spent decades making the thinnest movements in the world, finally putting them in a watch that matched their ambition.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
