Piaget Polo 7661 C 701 - 18K Yellow Gold & Onyx

An Icon Of 1980s Extravagance

The Piaget Polo was the brand's unapologetic entry into the luxury sports watch category of the late 1970s. While others focused on steel, Piaget leaned into its identity as a master jeweler, creating a watch entirely in precious metal. The standard solid gold Polo was already one of the most expensive timepieces of its day. This reference takes it a step further by integrating hand-cut slices of black onyx, a high-ticket addition that dramatically increased its cost and visual presence.

Seamless Design, Striking Contrast

What defines the Polo is its fully integrated construction, where the bracelet and case form a single, flowing piece of jewelry. This example showcases that philosophy perfectly. The alternating pattern of polished 18K yellow gold gadroons and deep black onyx panels runs uninterrupted from the dial across the case and down the entire length of the bracelet. The effect is fluid and substantial, a testament to the complex engineering required to execute such a design. It is a pure expression of the era's confidence.

Honest Gold, Stable Onyx

The 18K yellow gold case and bracelet are in very good condition, retaining their original lines and presence. The onyx slices show some slight cracking. The integrated bracelet is well-preserved and wears comfortably. As with every watch we offer, this piece has been verified as mechanically sound and is ready to wear.

A Wearable Piece Of Art

This watch is for the person who understands and appreciates the bold, maximalist style of the 1980s. It is not a subtle timepiece. The weight of the gold and the stark contrast of the onyx make a clear statement. Yet, its proportions are classic and the integrated design ensures it sits perfectly on the wrist. It functions less as a tool and more as a piece of high-design jewelry that also happens to tell time.

History

The Piaget Polo was introduced in 1979 and represented one of the most significant departures from the brand's established identity as a manufacturer of ultra-thin movements for third-party cases. Named after the equestrian sport that had long been associated with European aristocratic leisure, the Polo was designed as an integrated sports watch for the luxury market — a direct response to the success that Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe were achieving with their own integrated steel references. Piaget's answer was characteristically more extravagant: a rounded case with a deeply integrated bracelet, offered from the outset in precious metal with dial options that emphasized the brand's jewelry heritage.

The Polo's defining design element is the continuous relationship between the case and bracelet. The individual links are designed to follow the curvature of the wrist without creating any visible transition between the watch and its band, an effect that requires a level of engineering precision that few manufacturers have matched. The rounded case shape and the absence of sharp angles give the Polo a softer visual character than the octagonal sports watches that preceded it, making it simultaneously more accessible and more overtly luxurious. It was designed to be worn at every occasion, and its proportions allow it to function as a dress watch in a way that the more aggressively designed sports references cannot.

For collectors, the vintage Polo — particularly in yellow gold from the 1980s — represents the apex of Piaget's design ambition during the period when the brand was most directly engaged with the luxury sports watch category. The condition of the integrated bracelet is the primary factor in determining the value of any given example, as the complexity of the link construction makes restoration difficult and replacement costly. Examples that have retained their original finishing and structural integrity without excessive stretching or polishing command strong premiums and are genuinely difficult to source in the current market.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
