Piaget Polo "Jumbo" 7661 C701 – 18K Yellow Gold Gadroon Dial

Details

The Definitive Status Symbol Of The Eighties

The Piaget Polo was the defining accessory of the 1980s jet set. Introduced by Yves Piaget in 1979, this Reference 7661 represents the Jumbo 34mm execution, which carries significantly more presence on the wrist than the standard sizes of the era. The design is famous for its total integration, where the solid 18k yellow gold horizontal gadroons flow uninterrupted from the dial through the case and across the entire bracelet. It is a singular, heavy object that blurred the line between high jewelry and horology.

High Jewelry Construction

Piaget’s philosophy during this period was to treat gold like a fabric, and the Polo is the purest expression of that. Every surface is textured and polished to catch the light in a way that typical sports watches cannot. Because the bracelet is integrated and features the original screw-link construction, it maintains a seamless profile that hugs the wrist. This reference captures the peak of the brand's creative era, utilizing a precise quartz movement that allowed for the slim, sleek proportions that made the Polo an icon.

Exceptional Gold Integrity With Crystal Wear

The condition is very good. The 18k yellow gold case and integrated bracelet maintain sharp lines and show less wear than is typical for a watch of this age. The gold dial is clean and remains in excellent cosmetic shape. There are visible scratches on the crystal between the 9 and 12 o'clock positions. After passing our test bench, the quartz movement is running strong and keeping excellent time.

A Timeless Design Icon

The Polo works today because it has transitioned from a period piece to a timeless design icon. It is a substantial gold watch that wears with the ease of a bracelet, making it equally effective for formal settings or elevated daily wear. For a collector looking for the most recognizable and impactful version of Piaget’s golden era, this Jumbo reference is the correct choice. It is a high-level piece of design history that still feels sophisticated.

History

When Piaget unveiled the Polo in 1979, the watch world was still processing what Audemars Piguet had done in 1972 with the Royal Oak. Piaget's answer was the Polo: an integrated bracelet watch with an ultrathin movement housed in a round case, built entirely in 18-karat gold, and priced accordingly.

The Polo was named for the sport that Yves G. Piaget — grandson of the founder — played and sponsored, and the watch carried his sensibility: sporty enough to wear at the polo grounds, refined enough to wear at the dinner that followed. The integrated bracelet, with its alternating polished and brushed surfaces, is one of the most tactile in the industry.

Reference 7661 (the "Jumbo" Polo in 34mm) and the smaller 861 C 701 are the classic references. Available in yellow and white gold, with onyx, diamond, and solid-colored dials, the Polo represents Piaget at full confidence — a manufactory that had spent decades making the thinnest movements in the world, finally putting them in a watch that matched their ambition.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
