A Masterclass In Eighties Geometric Design

The Piaget Protocole is one of the most expressive silhouettes from an era when the brand was pushing the boundaries of case design. While much of the industry was focused on round tool watches, Piaget leaned into a bold rectangular identity that treated 18K white gold like a sculptural medium. This reference 174101 features a multi stepped bezel that creates a tiered effect. It catches light from every angle and gives the watch a presence that feels greater than its dimensions. It is a confident piece of design that captures the philosophy Piaget embraced throughout the 1980s.

Refined Monochromatic Sophistication

This reference showcases Piagets ability to execute a high concept design without losing its formal elegance. The silver sunburst dial serves as a clean and radiant center that pulls focus back to the intricate white gold steps of the case. By keeping the color palette strictly monochromatic, the focus remains entirely on the geometry. It represents a period when Piaget was the undisputed leader of the jewelry watch category. They created pieces that functioned as design objects first and timekeepers second.

Exceptional Integrity And Original Hardware

The watch is in very good overall condition. The 18K white gold case retains its sharp and defined steps while the silver sunburst dial and crystal are both perfect. This piece is powered by a quartz movement that is running strong after passing our test bench. We have paired it with a new ostrich leather strap that complements the textured look of the case and it retains its original 18K white gold Piaget buckle.

A Bold Alternative To The Status Quo

This is for the person who wants a vintage gold watch that feels like a piece of structural art. The Protocole works because it is instantly recognizable as a high tier vintage Piaget. It offers a visual complexity that you will not find in a standard Tank or Ellipse. It is a sharp and wearable reminder of the era when Piaget dominated high design. It remains a heavy hitting style statement today as an honest and well preserved example of one of the brands most distinctive silhouettes.

History

The Protocole is the formal expression of Piaget's integrated bracelet philosophy applied to a stepped rectangular case — structured, architectural, and built in 18-karat gold with ultrathin quartz or manual movements. Produced from the late 1970s through the 1990s, it bridges the gap between Piaget's pure dress watches and the sportier Polo.

References 174101 and 9150 in our inventory offer the Protocole in yellow gold, white gold, and with both original leather straps and integrated gold bracelets. The stepped case — where the case descends in layers from the crystal to the lugs — is a detail that rewards close inspection. These are watches made for the kind of person who notices such things.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
