1976 Rolex Cellini 4084 – Blue Vignette Dial

Details

Deep Center Fading To Black

The 4084 is a product of the mid-seventies, an era where Rolex moved the Cellini line into more experimental territory. The TV case shape offers a wide, rectangular presence that sits differently on the wrist than a standard circular watch. While it presents with the low-profile look of brushed stainless steel, the case is executed entirely in 18k white gold. It is a quiet material choice that prioritizes the owner's experience over outward flash, maintaining a tool-watch aesthetic in a precious metal format.

A Deep Gradient Narrative

The blue vignette dial is the focal point of this reference. It transitions from a bright cobalt center to a deep, near-black perimeter, a finishing technique that Rolex perfected during this period. This gradient adds a level of visual weight and motion that a flat dial cannot achieve. Paired with the brushed white gold case, the dial color pops with a specific intensity that feels intentional and structured. It represents a peak era of Rolex dial experimentation that remains highly sought after by those who value color depth.

Preserved In Top Form

This watch is in excellent condition and has been remarkably well-preserved over the last five decades. The white gold case maintains its sharp, brushed finish and shows no signs of heavy wear or softening. The blue vignette dial is in top form, showing no signs of spotting or age-related degradation. The crystal is clear. It is currently mounted on a clean leather strap with an aftermarket buckle. After passing our test bench, the manual-wind movement is running strong and is ready for regular use.

A Discrete High Tier Choice

This is for the person who wants a vintage Rolex that steps outside the traditional Oyster Perpetual shadow. It offers a sophisticated, geometric silhouette that feels more like a piece of intentional 1970s design than a standard timepiece. The combination of the brushed precious metal and the deep blue gradient dial makes it an easy choice for someone who values discretion and specific details. It is a heavy-hitting gold reference that stays under the radar until it is right in front of you.

History

The Cellini line — named after Renaissance goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini — is Rolex's dress watch offering, and it operates on entirely different logic than the sport and tool watches the brand is famous for. No date window, no rotating bezel, no crown guards. Just case, dial, and movement.

Introduced in the late 1960s, Cellini watches are exclusively 18-karat gold and are powered by manual-wind movements. The collection covers an extraordinary range of case shapes across its history: round, oval, rectangular, cushion, asymmetric, and the distinctive Cestello oval — all sharing a commitment to slim proportions and refined finishing that stands apart from anything else in the Rolex catalog.

References span from the early 3800-series oval cases of the late 1960s and early 1970s through the square 4233 Danaos of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Dials range from brushed champagne and silver sunburst to red and blue vignette, white Arabic, and foil patterns that no longer exist in current production. For collectors who want Rolex craftsmanship without the sport-watch aesthetic, Cellini is the answer — and it remains one of the most underappreciated categories in the entire vintage Rolex universe.

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
