2000 Rolex Cellini 4233 - Black Arabic Dial

Details

Danaos-era Cellini, complete and preserved

This Rolex Cellini from 2000 represents the line at its most resolved. Executed with a black dial and precious-metal casework, it carries the calm, architectural clarity that defined the Danaos-era Cellinis, clean geometry, slim proportions, and an emphasis on finish over flourish. The presence of original papers adds meaningful context and a clue into the world of who the original buyer may have been.

It’s composed, deliberate, and unmistakably late-era Cellini.

Why this configuration stands out

The black dial shifts the tone of the 4233 entirely. Where lighter dials emphasize softness, this one leans graphic and confident, giving the square case more visual structure. Paired with precious metal, the contrast feels intentional rather than decorative.

The watch is fitted on a strap with its original OEM buckle, preserving the intended look and maintaining period correctness. The manual-wind movement keeps the profile slim and elegant, exactly in line with what the Cellini was meant to be at the turn of the millennium.

Having the original papers matters here. Late Cellinis were worn, enjoyed, and rarely kept complete; full examples are meaningfully harder to find today.

Condition, clearly stated

Condition is excellent throughout. The case presents cleanly with no notable marks, the dial remains in excellent shape, and the crystal is clear. The strap and original buckle are both in very good condition, reinforcing the watch’s overall cohesion.

Mechanically, the movement is performing strongly, showing healthy amplitude and stable timekeeping.

A complete, late-era Cellini

This is a Cellini for someone who values finish, proportion, and completeness over spectacle. Elegant without being fragile, distinctive without being loud, and supported by original papers, it stands as a strong example of Rolex’s dress-watch philosophy at its most mature.

A refined ref. 4233 that wears easily, presents honestly, and offers lasting appeal for collectors who understand the quieter side of the brand.

History

The Cellini line — named after Renaissance goldsmith and sculptor Benvenuto Cellini — is Rolex's dress watch offering, and it operates on entirely different logic than the sport and tool watches the brand is famous for. No date window, no rotating bezel, no crown guards. Just case, dial, and movement.

Introduced in the late 1960s, Cellini watches are exclusively 18-karat gold and are powered by manual-wind movements. The collection covers an extraordinary range of case shapes across its history: round, oval, rectangular, cushion, asymmetric, and the distinctive Cestello oval — all sharing a commitment to slim proportions and refined finishing that stands apart from anything else in the Rolex catalog.

References span from the early 3800-series oval cases of the late 1960s and early 1970s through the square 4233 Danaos of the late 1990s and early 2000s. Dials range from brushed champagne and silver sunburst to red and blue vignette, white Arabic, and foil patterns that no longer exist in current production. For collectors who want Rolex craftsmanship without the sport-watch aesthetic, Cellini is the answer — and it remains one of the most underappreciated categories in the entire vintage Rolex universe.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
