Rolex Datejust 16018 - Blue Dial

Details

Blue sunburst, full gold presence

This Rolex Datejust from 1983 shows the model at its most confident. Executed entirely in 18k yellow gold and paired with a deep blue sunburst dial, it delivers a combination that feels unmistakably Rolex while still sitting outside the more common champagne-dial formula most people expect from a full-gold Datejust.

Why this configuration stands out

The blue sunburst dial is the defining element. Rich in tone and highly responsive to light, it brings contrast and depth that elevates the yellow gold case rather than competing with it. This color pairing was always a premium choice and remains one of the most desirable executions of the reference.

Equally important is the presence of the full 18k yellow gold Jubilee bracelet. It gives the watch a softer, more fluid feel on the wrist than an Oyster bracelet would, reinforcing the Datejust’s role as a refined, everyday luxury watch rather than a statement piece.

Condition, clearly stated

Condition is strong and original. The case and lugs remain unpolished, retaining their definition and shape. The bracelet shows light stretch consistent with age but remains solid and wearable. The dial is in very good shape, with the lume in the hands and markers intact and matching. The buckle presents well, and the crystal shows no distracting marks.

Mechanically, the watch is running exceptionally well, with stable timekeeping and healthy amplitude after passing it by the test bench.

A classic full-gold Datejust

This isn’t about rarity for rarity’s sake. It’s about one of Rolex’s most enduring designs executed in its most luxurious form, with the right dial, strong overall condition, and honest wear.

For someone looking for a vintage full-gold Rolex that feels substantial, timeless, and genuinely usable, this ref. 16018 delivers presence, balance, and long-term appeal in equal measure.

History

The Datejust debuted in 1945 as Rolex’s 40th‑anniversary timepiece.  It combined the brand’s major innovations — a waterproof Oyster case, self‑winding Perpetual rotor and chronometer‑certified movement — and added a new feature: a date window that automatically advanced at midnight.  This simple, yet practical display marked the first time a wristwatch offered a self‑winding movement with a date indication in a dial aperture.  The watch was launched on the Jubilee bracelet, designed for comfort and flexibility, and its fluted bezel underscored its dressier appeal.Rolex continued to refine the Datejust after its launch.  In 1953 the company added a magnifying Cyclops lens over the date to improve legibility.  The mid‑century models maintained the original 36 mm case size and time‑only simplicity while introducing new dial colours and precious metal options.  The model eventually expanded into smaller and larger sizes and, in 1957, the Lady‑Datejust provided the same functionality in a watch designed for women.Through its long production run the Datejust has remained a cornerstone of the Rolex line because it blends practicality with versatile styling.  Its combination of automatic winding, chronometer accuracy and instantaneous date change serves everyday needs without excess ornamentation.  The enduring form, an Oyster case with screw‑down crown and bracelet — resists moisture and dust.  Collectors appreciate early Datejusts for their historical significance and the way later iterations carry forward the original design language.  Even today the Datejust remains a reference point for a classic, reliable wristwatch.

What Our Clients Say About Us

I knew I was gonna like Danny, based on his name, but nothing could’ve prepared me for how great of an experience this was. He had the most beautiful 70s Seamaster Cosmic on his website and I was set to be married 2 days later - I arranged to buy it but before leaving we both realized it needed to be serviced. I panicked, because I was literally buying this for my wedding, and Danny being the legend he is, loaned me a nearly identical Seamaster to make sure I could get through the event Never have I had someone go so above and beyond for me, especially while purchasing one of the lesser priced items in their inventory. He serviced my watch and exchanged it with me after the wedding on a super fast turnaround timeline. I would sincerely recommend you visit this guy, you will not be disappointed Edit: adding a pic of the loaner (two tone) and the owner (crosshair)

Great service and shop. Danny and his team were incredibly accommodating, professional, and kind. Great selection of vintage watches. Their store is the hidden gem in the diamond district.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
