Released in 1954, it was commissioned by Scandinavian Airlines to commemorate their pioneering flights over the North Pole, requiring a watch that could withstand the intense magnetic fields. Genta, then only 23, delivered a masterpiece of mid-century design with his signature twisted lugs and a clean, functional layout. It is one of the most important and accessible pieces from the mind that would later create the Royal Oak and Nautilus.
The Beauty Of A Natural Color Shift
This example is distinguished by its stunning tropical dial. The original black surface has aged over decades into a rich, varied brown, a natural process caused by long-term exposure to sunlight. This "tropicalization" is a unique and random occurrence that cannot be replicated, giving each watch its own specific character. The effect on this piece is particularly compelling, with different shades appearing depending on the light, all centered around a sharp crosshair pattern and accented by dauphine hands. It is paired with its original Universal Genève beads of rice bracelet.
An Honest Vintage Timepiece
The stainless steel case and dial are in great cosmetic, untouched condition. The dial's transformation from black to a deep, shifting brown is the main event. There is a scratch on the dial near the 9 o'clock position. The crown is a replacement, while all other parts are original to the watch. The original beads of rice bracelet is intact and fits up to a 7-inch wrist. As with every watch we offer, this piece has been verified as mechanically sound and is ready to wear.

This was my first real luxury watch purchase, a Rolex 15200 Date 34mm, I own Tissots and a Laco, but those are entry level luxury watches. I found Danny’s Vintage Watches online, and had great feedback both on Google, Chrono24 and the Reddit watch community. So decided to give him a shot as buying online can be a crap shoot. Ordered Monday night, was at my doorstep Friday morning. Despite the watch being over 30 years old, serial number says it’s from 91, the watch looked new. Didn’t come with box or papers, and was shipped in a plastic sleeve wrapped in bubble wrap. Danny was always available to answer questions. I’ll be buying from Danny again for the next purchase…saw a couple of Speedmasters on his site I liked….
